"My Favorite Teacher

Well lets see.... I can think of several teachers that made a difference in my life. Of course my parents would be number one on the list.

The first teacher that I felt really cared and opened my eyes to the good of learning was Miss Helm, my 4th grade teacher. She was kind and positive. In 1965 my parents took me to Irvine CA where they were building UCI and said they would like me to go to college there. Mr Reed my 6th grade teacher was another good influence. He talked about doing well in school and going to college. He also talked to me about getting along with others in spite of our differences.

In 7th grade it would be Miss Goldstein who taught geography. She was strict and gave me the only detention I ever got. Because I of her, I learned that my education was important and I had to be careful not to let "friends" lead me in the wrong direction. I also loved Mrs Allan. She was my English teacher and I love the way she read to us. I will always remember her and Great Expectations. Ok, one more teacher here, Mr. Mahoney that never gave up on me with math.

I don't remember the teachers in 8th grade cooking and sewing, but I will forever be grateful for those classes. They were once mandatory in CA, but at some point became electives.

Now how can I forget the crush on my cute teacher the grade teacher Mr Early. was young and cute and had reddish hair. I had him for biology and he challenged my beliefs that I was taught in church.

Now back in my days, there were not to many Hispanic kids in my classes that were college prep. I would have to thank Mrs. Truit, the VP for encouraging me to get counseling to help me plan for classed I would need for college.

Lets move to Santa Ana High School in1970. My hardest class was Honors History with Mr. Haffner. We had to write term papers and do oral presentations and it was hard. I remember getting a D the first report card and feeling so bad, but he encouraged me. I remember doing a paper on the 3 Greek Philosophers Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. I sure read a lot that year! I end up with a B+ and learned a lot from him. I also had him for Psychology and Sociology in 12th grade. Mr. Ashbaugh was a great teacher though I got a D in his chemistry class. I just could not handle the math. He assisgned me a tutor from my class that end up being my boyfriend for the year. Thanks Mr. Asbaugh!

Mrs. Etter was my home ec teacher for a couple of years and she was great! I enjoyed the things I learned and won the Betty Crocker award for my high school for 1973. I sure liked my geometry teacher Mr. Espinoza. I had to since I had to take the course twice. A D was not good for UCI so I end up with a B. Finally there was my physiology class with Mr. Morrison. He was a serious, quiet teacher, but we sure learned from him and I got an A which I needed for UCI.

I can honestly say I enjoyed school and my teachers. I loved GAA, girls athletic Association and playing against other schools. I was on the Sr. field hockey team, basketball and baseball. Sports also kept me fit and back then we took full on showers.

I also had great counselors like Mr. Petry and Mr. Snell. I got great letters recommendationsof and gradutated in 1973. I ended up at the University Califronia Irvine and was the first person in my family to get a 4 year degree in 1977.

For the past 12 years I am thankful to my Pastor Jim who has been a great Bible teacher and has really encouraged me to study the Word. It is a good thing I like to read!

Finally, thanks to Darylynn for the great assignments that take me down memory lane while I still have it. I can now print this assignment and put it in my Book of Me scrapbook with pictures one I find them.
