There are two main types of inkpads, pigment ink and dye ink. Pigment ink is slow drying but is waterproof so you can use it with wet mediums like watercolor. Dye inks dry fast but are not waterproof. Pigment inks are more likely to bleed through the pages so you have to prep your page ahead of time with gesso.
